Cultural Beliefs

In the Kanaka Maoli belief system there were two main belief structures: the 'Ihi Kapu and Huikala.

'Ihu Kapu- The Sacred Law
This is a system of consecrated law that enabled the Maoli people to live harmoniously with each other, nature, and the spiritual world.

These people believed that after death you returned spiritually to Po (the ancestral realm). In order to correctly surrender yourself to the sacredness of the 'Ihu Kapu, one must remain "Kapu" (protected) and understand that "each human is bound to divine prospect".

If you broke the divine law in pre-contact Hawaii, the Huikala ritual was needed. This ritual was thought to cleanse the spirit and atone for ones mistakes.

After the arrival of the Western explorers, the Hawaiian practices of 'Ihi Kapu and Huikala were replaced by the Western "epistemological dogma".
